Whether you are a new or experienced hiker, a solo traveler or large family, new to Zion or a return visitor, Zion National Park has hiking options for you.

General Tips

This guide to the top hikes in Zion National Park is ordered by difficulty and includes all of the need-to-know information when planning your adventure!

Beginner Hikes in Zion

Lower Emerald Pools

1.2 Miles | 1 Hour

The hike to the lower of the Emerald Pools is well liked for families. Follow along the lush greenery bordering a stream to immerse yourself in a desert oasis. Over the course of the hike you will see two waterfalls trickling down from the upper pools.

Weeping Rock

0.4 Miles | 30 Minutes Roundtrip

This paved trail leads to Weeping Rock, a large sandstone canyon with trickling water and dense hanging plants. It is only a half mile hike with a gradual incline, making it a great option for families!

Riverside Walk

2.2 Miles | 1 Hour to 1.5 Hours Roundtrip

Next, the Riverside Walk is a level and paved pathway along the Virgin River. While walking it, you will be able to be immersed in the chirping of birds and the rushing of the water. Keep your eyes peeled because wildlife sightings are common along the trail. It is both wheelchair and family friendly, making it a great way to experience the heart of Zion.

Intermediate to Advanced Hikes in Zion

Middle-Upper Emerald Pools

2-3 Miles | 2-4 Hours

The hike to the Middle and Upper Emerald Pools gets increasingly more difficult from the hike to the lower pools. Similarly to the first part of the hike, the trail continues the desert paradise with streams, waterfalls, and beautiful plants. The contrast of striking green trees and sandstone cliffs is memorable and enjoyable. The hike to the upper pools is most difficult but the climb up the cliffs above the pools below is quick and provides great views and space to relax and enjoy some snacks.

The Narrows

Walk, wade, and swim your way through the Virgin River in this hike through a narrow slot canyon. The Narrows can be hiked a couple of different ways: bottom up or top down (either in one day or overnight). Bottom up tends to be more popular and is the better option for those with limited time or children in their party. Hikers are able to take the trail as far as they would like and then turn around. No matter which option you pick to hike The Narrows, be sure to prepare with waterproof clothing and footwear and a permit if you are choosing to hike the 16 mile top down route.

Angel’s Landing

5.4 Miles | 4 Hours Roundtrip

Perhaps the most famous hike in Zion National Park, Angel’s Landing is quite an undertaking. Between narrow ledges and steep drop offs, the hike is known to be strenuous. It contains a long series of switchbacks which lead to a ridge that can be crossed using metal chains in the rocks. While difficult, all will tell you that the view from the top is worth it. From the summit, you are able to see the surrounding sandstone cliffs in all their grandeur. Some tips: consider hiking early in the morning to avoid crowds, plan to get shuttle tickets ahead of time, and use caution when considering bringing children.

Observation Point

8 Miles | 5 Hours Roundtrip

With breathtaking views of Zion Canyon and the Virgin River, the steep trek to the summit of Observation Point is well worth it. Comparable to Angel’s Landing (some locals will even say it is superior), the hike contains drop offs at high elevations and winding switchbacks.  The trail carved out of the canyon and cliffs will be remembered fondly for years to come!
