opening / closing dates

Are you spending the weekend at Wander Camp‘s Glacier location and looking for activities around you? Glacier is one of the most gorgeous national parks and has plenty of outdoor activities. This guide will discuss some ideas of how and where to spend your time this weekend.

Going-To-The-Sun Road

Going-To-The-Sun Road is an 11 minute drive from Wander Camp’s site and around 25 minutes from Glacier National Park, depending on where you are starting. This road is famous for its iconic waterfalls and amazing wildlife. Glacier is home to many different varieties of wildlife: Bighorn sheep, coyotes, bobcats, moose, mountain goats, deer, marmots, elk, and so much more. While on your drive you are likely to see some of these animals. This road is normally fully open from early July until the third Monday in October. You can check the opening/closing status of the road here.

Lake McDonald

Lake McDonald is famous for its multicolored stones that line the bottom of the lake and can be seen through the crystal waters. To fully enjoy the grandeur of the lake you can go on a boat tour, rent a paddle board or kayak, or enjoy the view from the shore. Lake McDonald is just 30 minutes from our campsite.

Saint Mary Lake

If you are feeling you did not get enough of the wildlife after driving down Going-To-The-Sun Road, Saint Mary Lake is also known for its wildlife sightings. Saint Mary Lake is a whopping 10 miles long. This lake provides a breathtaking view of the beauty of this world. Capturing this view provides great content for family photos and/or Instagram.

The Trail of Cedars

This hike is known for its beauty and ease when hiking. Some features include well-established cedar trees and waterfalls. The hike itself is around 1 mile, but you can hike up additional portions to the Avalanche Lake trail and/or any other sites that interest you. This hike is a 45 minute drive from our camp site. While it is a longer drive, the hike gives you a different view when comparing to Saint Mary Lake and Lake McDonald.

Don’t Miss Out

In closing, Glacier National Park provides many outdoor options for any weekend getaway. These four activities are some of the most well-known and well-rated. We hope that in the future you will come and stay at Wander Camp‘s Glacier location and take some time exploring the sites.
