Are you a thrill-seeker looking for your next adventure? Cliff jumping is the perfect activity for adrenaline junkies! It’s also (arguably) the best way to plunge into the water on a hot day. National Parks around the United States have fun, safe spots to test the waters of cliff diving. Let me tell you about six awesome cliff jumping spots!
Before we dive into the good stuff, I want to warn that cliff jumping is a risky sport. Always put safety first and be smart about your dives. Make sure everyone jumping is a strong swimmer. Safe diving spots are a few meters away from walls and rocks, so be ready to swim for minutes at a time. Additionally, be sure that your landing spot is at least 4 meters deep and free from any trees, sharp rocks or other dangerous objects. Finally, ALWAYS aim to land feet first! Nobody wants to belly flop from 80 feet, trust me. This article has additional information on cliff diving safety that I suggest you read.
Alright, now for the fun! Here are some jumps to try!
Havasu Falls, Arizona
This 100-foot cascade is known for its gorgeous turquoise waters that lap against the vibrant red rock of Arizona. Located in Grand Canyon National Park, the oasis provides a great spot to cool off, and also an adrenaline rush for those brave enough to jump! Most divers shy away from the full 100 feet and instead jump from lower cliffs. This would be the perfect adventure to add on to your Wander Camp Grand Canyon stay!
Crater Lake, Oregon
Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States. Thus, it makes for a pretty safe place to dive! The beautiful greenery of Oregon combined with the crystal blue lake water will give you the chills. You’ll find cliffs at a variety of heights, making this the perfect place to attempt your first jump.
Lake Powell, Utah/Arizona
Powell, with its stunning red rock and cyan waters, is a popular destination for many Utahns and Arizonians. The lake is lined with miles of sandstone cliffs to jump from. The park recommends that visitors dive from cliffs no higher than 15 feet, but some of the 70-foot cliffs are just irresistible. Another bonus is that Lake Powell is located just under two hours from the Grand Canyon as well as Zion National Park. So, make it a Western National Park road trip and stay with us in Arizona or Utah!
The “Old” Belton Bridge, Montana
How cool would it be to say you jumped off of a bridge? Belton Bridge was built in 1920 and was the primary entrance to Glacier National Park for decades. It has since been closed to vehicles and become a hangout spot for locals. Test your bravery and plunge into the cold flathead river! I’d recommend camping and hiking in the summer heat before visiting the bridge to avoid freezing temperatures.
Sand Hollow, Utah
I know you might be thinking, “these are all in Utah or Arizona”. Well, yes! Utah and Arizona offer some of the most unique and encaptivating landscapes in the United States. If you haven’t visited yet, you are missing out! My final jump recommendation in this area is Sand Hollow. This fun-filled lake offers activities for the whole family: boating, playing in the sand, swimming, and, most importantly, cliff diving. It’s a great pit stop for those on their way in or out of Zion National Park.
Be aware – swimmer’s itch lives in the water at Sand Hollow, and you may be susceptible to it. Make sure to do your research on swimmer’s itch and ways to prevent it before visiting!
Crypt Lake, Canada
I know it’s in Canada, but Crypt Lake happens to be located inside of Glacier National Park! The hike to the lake is one of the most serene trails I have ever trekked. It’s located near a mountain, providing lots of rock outcroppings to dive from. This spot is perfect for a picnic and some fun in the water!
There are many more cliff diving spots around the United States, many of which may be local to you! Comment any recommendations you have on this post; I would love to find some hidden gems!
If you’re looking for a great place to stay near these spots, check out our campsites in Zion, Glacier, Grand Canyon, Moab and more! Remember, always think before you jump! Cliff jumping is dangerous if not performed safely. Put safety first, and fun second! I hope you get to test these dives and channel your inner red bull competitor!
