opening / closing dates

Bryce Canyon National Park, located in southern Utah, is home to a natural amphitheater of brightly colored red rock formations. The park uniquely offers activities that can be enjoyed in each season. Look beyond hiking and exploring and consider skiing, snowshoeing, local festivals, and astronomy when planning your trip and Bryce Canyon activities. The different seasonal options for activities allow you to plan a visit to the national park at any time of year, no matter the weather or temperature!

Hiking

Hiking in Bryce Canyon National Park can be enjoyed year round. Read Wander Camp’s guide of hikes in Bryce Canyon to prepare for your trip. The park welcomes visitors of all ages and abilities to hike its paths, so research the trails beforehand to find the perfect fit for you. Pets are even allowed on paved paths, so consider bringing along your furry companion. Bryce Canyon’s hiking trails are available year round for hikers, cross country skiers, and snowshoers. Whether you are looking for an easy day hike for your family or backpacking on a multiple day adventure, Bryce Canyon has trails that will suit your hiking needs.

Canyoneering

Southern Utah, where Bryce Canyon is located, is known for its beautiful slot canyons. These narrow openings between rocks are excellent places to climb and hike. Wall Street, located in Bryce Canyon National Park itself, is a short slot canyon hike. After descending into the canyon, you will quickly find yourself dwarfed by the towering walls. Bryce Canyon is also within a short distance of the Escalante area, which is known for having some of the greatest slot canyons in the southwest part of the country.  Consider taking a drive into the area to explore canyons such as Buckskin Gulch, Coyote Gulch, and Peek-A-Boo Gulch.

Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing

Located at an elevation of 8000 feet, Bryce Canyon National Park changes with the seasons. Winter hiking, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing are unique opportunities when visiting this national park. Winter gear is heavily encouraged for your visits during the colder months. While cross country skiing in the park, you must stay above the rim on trails such as the Bristlecone Loop Trail, Paria Ski Loop, and the Rim Trail (on the edge of the amphitheater). You can also check out Paria View and Fairland Point which are unplowed.

Cross country skiing not quite your speed? Try snowshoeing the Rim Trail, Bristlecone Loop, or Fairyland Road. Snowshoeing enables you to hike through snowy conditions at a greater speed. You do not need to have any experience with snowshoeing and can learn how to do it at any age! Consider participating in a ranger-led snowshoe hike if you are new to the sport and would like extra guidance and tips.

Astronomy

Next, the wide night sky framed by the canyon’s hoodoo rock formations shows brilliant stars and cosmos. Far from pollution and cities, Bryce Canyon provides a clear and beautiful view of the night sky. Bryce Canyon National Park is certified as an International Dark Sky Park. There are a variety of ways to enjoy Bryce Canyon’s world class stargazing. Venture into the park at night on your own to enjoy a hike under the bright stars and moon. Book a private tour or ranger program to enjoy a guided perspective of the park and the cosmos above. Ranger Telescope Tours is one option for a private tour using telescopes for an even more magnificent view of the park’s night sky.

Bryce Canyon also hosts an annual Astronomy Festival. Enjoy speakers on topics such as geology and astronomy, rocket launches, junior ranger programs for kids, guided hikes, and phenomenal views of the stars.

Winter Festival

Finally, in addition to the annual astronomy festival, the Bryce Canyon Winter Festival held by Ruby’s Inn is an annual event that offers a variety of fun activities for people of all ages. The activities include cross country skiing, archery, snowshoeing, kids programs and crafts, workshops, and more. The festival is held annually in January.
