National Parks are full of amazing scenery and wildlife. People all around the world travel to our different Wander Camp locations to experience the thrill and beauty of what these national parks have to offer. We want to make sure you know how to watch and observe wildlife while you stay with us here at Wander Camp. Sage Scott, from Travel Awaits, gives us some good advice on this.

First, always know that the animals around you know the national park better than you do. Most animals have better senses of smell than humans do, and while many of these animals won’t generally attack you, when threatened most animals will retaliate. Not only should you be aware of animals for safety, but being on the lookout will also allow you to notice more of the wildlife and habitat of the national parks you are visiting.

Second, always stay on the trail. Staying on designated hiking trails is good for several different reasons. While it is good to not destroy more plants and trees than needed, it is also helpful to the different animals in the area. They are able to identify where humans generally go, and are able to steer clear of those areas.

Third, don’t get too close to wildlife when taking pictures of them. This may seem obvious, but animals don’t like to feel threatened any more than we do, and getting too close can be dangerous for you and for them. In order to remain safe, a distance of at least 100 yards is highly recommended. It can be nice to have a pair of binoculars with you to help see things more clearly.

Lastly, do not feed the animals. While most people know better than to try and feed a bear, they don’t understand that this also applies to animals like birds and chipmunks. When we feed the animals, it makes them dependent on the food that humans give them for survival. Human food is also nutritionally unhealthy for these animals as well. It can also make these animals easier prey for natural predators. Watch and observe wildlife, but do not feed or engage with them for your safety, and theirs.

Here at Wander Camp, we love experiencing the great outdoors with you. Through these wildlife watching safety tips, we hope you feel more comfortable coming to one of our many locations in the western United States. See you soon!
